Trump Hotels Loses To Las Vegas Unions

Two service unions were certified Monday as the exclusive representatives for Trump International Hotel Las Vegas despite adamant opposition from management.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 have fought to unionize the Trump Las Vegas hotel. Hotel workers voted to unionize Dec. 7, but management has refused to recognize the vote despite federal pressure. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) region director ruled the election is valid and management must recognize the union.

“The Culinary and Bartenders Union have been certified as the legal collective bargaining representatives of more than 500 workers,” Local 226 noted in a press release. “The action will be final unless the NLRB exercises its limited discretion to review.”

Management has fought back against the unions. It filed a lawsuit Oct. 14 alleging the two locals knowingly lied in a flyer about Trump staying at a unionized hotel. The flyer was to show even Trump prefers hotels with unionized staff despite not letting his own workers organize.

Trump has faced significant opposition from the labor movement throughout the election, which the Las Vegas dispute has only fueled. The AFL-CIO declared Trump its loser of the week Feb. 22 over the Las Vegas labor dispute and again Feb. 29 for saying he likes right-to-work.

The hotel has also been accused of trying to illegally silence workers who supported the unions. The NLRB has filed complaints against the hotel that includes allegations of physical assault, verbal abuse, intimidation and threats to silence union supporters. Local 226 has accused the hotel of unfair suspension of five employees in 2014 and restricting the right of workers to show union support in 2015.
