Utility labor unions are calling on New York State lawmakers to make attacks on utility workers a felony. They say those who restore power are at significantly high risk of being attacked and need the legislation as a deterrent.

According to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Utility Labor Council, workers are vulnerable to criminal acts because they often work outdoors at all hours and enter areas where crime is high. The council says several workers have experienced being stabbed, robbery, and some have even been shot.

The bill would apply to state public law, which includes electric, natural gas, water, cable and broadband services.
