Donald Trump said his controversial remarks about Mexicans — calling them “rapists” and “criminal” – were “pretty mainstream,” according to the video of a deposition he made in a civil suit.
Trump was deposed on June 16 after he sued a pair of celebrity chefs, José André and Geoffrey Zakarian, for withdrawing from deals to open restaurants in his new hotel, the Trump International, in Washington, D.C.
The chefs bolted after Trump called for a new border wall and made other derogatory comments about Mexicans.
Trump acknowledged that he lost some business after his remarks — with Macy’s and other companies cutting ties.
But he defended his comments.
“I’ve tapped into something,” he said.
“And I’ve tapped into illegal immigration. But, you know, when you get more votes than anybody in the history of the party, history of the party by far, more than Ronald Reagan, more than Richard Nixon, more than Dwight D. Eisenhower, who won the Second World War, you know, that’s pretty mainstream, when you think about it.”
The only surprise in the roughly two-hour deposition was that the billionaire businessman wears glasses.
“I don’t have my glasses,” he said at the 33-minute mark, when the lawyer deposing him asked him to read documents aloud.
“I am at a disadvantage, I didn’t bring my glasses, this is such small writing,” he said.
Trump’s testimony was low-key and deliberate — likely disappointing Team Clinton, which experts said would have used any incendiary clips in attack ads.
