Why sublease the space from the TWU International? It is obvious that it is unfriendly towards the membership. This was a short sighted policy from Samuelsen to sublease the space that was occupied by the TWU International. It is clear that the membership is harmed by this policy.
The membership cannot conduct their meetings or social activities at this location because this building is considered a high security building. Why this building? There are many buildings in New York City that are people friendly. In addition why not stay at 80 West End Avenue where members had access to their officers?
We are a trade union that has maintainers, cleaners as well as many different titles. Thus everyone should feel welcomed when they head into their unionhall but 1700 Broadway is denying the membership from getting together. The membership needs the ability to assemble to discuss their grievances and vent. Therefore it will be a disadvantage for the membership to move to this new location.
This location will only add resentment among the brethren. This points out that Samuelsen did not take into consideration the cons of moving to this new location. We wonder why there was no discussion with the membership about moving to this location? Samuelsen should have picked a location that is friendly to the membership. However this new location contradicts the claims he purports of democracy and openness.
