Melania Trump accused of plagiarism in her latest campaign address. She spoke to supporters at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Thursday. 'America meant, if you could dream it, you could become it,' Melania said. It appears that she lifted the line from Donald's ex-wife, Marla Maples. Maples used the same quote during a magazine interview in 2011. The comment is a misquote of writer William Arthur Ward's famous line.'If you can dream it, you can become it,' the American author said.
Melania Trump appears to have been caught out again plagiarizing material in a campaign speech - this time lifting a line from Donald Trump's ex-wife, Marla Maples.
Melania made a rare speech as part of her husband's campaign on Thursday, addressing supporters at an event in Pennsylvania.
As part of the speech, the potential First Lady spoke about growing up in her native Slovenia.
'I grew up in a small town in Slovenia... America meant, if you could dream it, you could become it,' she told the throng of Trump supporters in attendance.
Unfortunately for Melania, it appears she may have picked up that line - which is a slight misquote of a famous comment made by American writer William Arthur Ward - from Marla Maples.
Ward's original quote was: 'If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.'
The only other place Melania's version seemingly appeared was in an interview Maples gave in 2011.
'I believed if you could dream it, you could become it, so I didn't see life as having any limitations,' she told Maximum Ink magazine at the time.
The potential plagiarism was pointed out by Twitter user Yoni Brander, who posted a series of comments explaining why he thinks the line was lifted from Marla.
'Just to nerd out for a second the fact that Maples’s interview and Melania’s speech are the ONLY sources share the same misquote of the original which is either Disney’s "If you can dream it, you can do it" or more likely "If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it," by William A. Ward,' he tweeted.
'But the form used by Melania which cuts the beginning of the quote and changes the tense to "if you dream it, you could become it" - a variant that appears in only in one other place - Marla Maples interview from 2011.
'Thus likelihood therefore is either they both heard this misquote from DJT or that Melania took this form from the Maples. Or perhaps DJT took it from the Maples interview...the only other place with this variance.'
Melania created controversy earlier this year when she appeared to steal a line from First Lady Michelle Obama, when she delivered a speech supporting her husband at the Republican National Convention.
