The Trump administration has proposed cutting the budget of a major US government climate science agency by almost 20 percent, according to new report.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which would see particular cuts to its research and satellite programs, the Washington Post reported.

A four-page budget memo outlines how the NOAA would lose 17 percent of its budget - which would end funding for programs such as coastal management and reduce research funding by $126m, or 26 percent, of its roughly $500m research budget.

The NOAA is part of the Commerce Department, which according to the budget memo from the Office of Management and Budget could be cut by 18 percent overall.

The National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, which monitors weather and collects climate data, would see the largest monetary budget cut - $513m, or 22 percent of its funding.

A $73m coastal research program conducted at various universities called Sea Grant would also be cut.

The figures have not been approved by Congress and so may change before the beginning of the 2018 fiscal year on October 1.

The OMB further said in the memo that the Trump administration will prioritize the military and seek to maximize efficiency.

It also asserted that government agencies should 'buy and manage like a business' and consider using privately owned satellites and other apparatuses.

Previous NOAA employees said that budget cuts would put the American public in danger.

Jane Lubchenco, who led the organization as its administrator from 2009 to 2013, said: 'NOAA's research and operations, including satellite data management, support critical safety needs.'

'A reduced investment now would virtually guarantee jeopardizing the safety of the American public.'

Lubchenco was succeeded by Kathryn D Sullivan, who served in the role until Donald Trump's inauguration.

The current administrator is Benjamin Friedman. The role is also called Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere.

The Environmental Protective Agency's funding would meanwhile be reduced by roughly 25 percent and about 3,000 jobs would be cut, about 19 percent of the agency's staff.

President Donald Trump has said he plans to pay for billions of dollars more for the military by cutting spending on domestic agencies and departments. Trump plans to submit his budget to Congress the week of March 13.

  1. No Global Warming was created by the worldwide bankers to tax the air. Your "carbon footprint". Global warming is the new religion. Disagree with it and you become a heretic subject to stoning. You global warming people answer me this question: How come we NEVER break the daily record high in temperature? Just look at the 6pm news. There is always a record high from years ago we do not break. Simple. Yes? Do some research and stop letting the corrupted media do your thinking for you. Good job by Trump cutting waste in a bloated Washington. Way to "drain the swamp"
