The Landrum-Griffin Act began with a bill of rights for union members that was intended to ensure the democratic operation of the union and to guarantee the individual member due process in meetings and disciplinary proceedings. Key provisions of the bill of rights were the following:
- Every union member has an equal right to attend, participate in, and vote at union meetings and elections.
- Members have freedom to assemble with other members and to voice their opinions concerning the policies of the union and the leadership.
- Members are protected from arbitrary increase in dues or other assessments.
- Union members have the right to be informed by union officials of their legal rights under the law.
- Every member has the right to a reasonable notice of disciplinary action by the union and the right to a fair hearing.

ReplyDeleteI implore you to maintain your literary credibility by reporting the facts so that your blog does not get labeled as tabloid journalism. You stated that the E- Bd is the supreme authority in authorizing Samuelsen to spend 21 million dollars of the members’ money. ARTICLE XII Sect 2 of the TWU CONSTITUTION states "the supreme authority in the Local Union shall be the membership of the Local Union, acting through duly called regular meetings of the Local Union or through duly called regular meetings of the respective sections or divisions of the Local meeting separately". The MEMBERSHIP can overturn any E-BD decision at a division or Mass Membership Meeting. A motion was made for a membership vote on the 21 MILION DOLLAR purchase of 3 CONDO FLOORS @ the POWER DIV. Meeting and duly seconded but the vote was blocked by DIv. Chair Ed DeCamillis which led to the members filing charges. Just as Marty Goodman brought a motion to the floor which was accepted and passed, so can JOHN LANDERS bring a motion to the floor for a MEMBERSHIP VOTE on THEIR MONEY! THAT MY FRIEND IS DEMOCRACY! What is Johnny Pathmark afraid of? If it's such a great deal then let his army of shop stewards put out his spin and let the MEMBERS decide how they want to spend THEIR 21 MILLION DOLLARS! A written correction on your blog would go a long way to maintaining your literary integrity.
Oh boy. Here we go again.
ReplyDeleteIn the midst of a contract battle you guys are more concerned about the building sale then you are about this Union’s next contract. What a shame that is.
James Mah-phony was part of the administration that was able to sell the building at 80 west end with only a eboard vote.
But now Ma-phony wants a vote to buy a building. What a Hypocrite, that shows no credibility.
And to question this blogs’journalistic integrity? Please guys, when does honest disagreement on an issue make someone not credible? Only when dictatorial politics rule the day.
So my question is: If you say you stand for Democracy why are you attacking this blog when it practices Democracy?
To have a free open exchange of ideas we must not try to silence those with different points of view.
I can't speak for brother Creegan although I do agree with him but I would like to respond too you. Your a SCAB and you know it. That's why the members need to have the final word because there are a few scabs on the e-board other than yourself. Lets see if the international approves the purchase of a condo.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot speak for brother Creegan?
ReplyDeleteYou just printed something you claim is from him.
Yet you say you cannot speak for him.
Mahoney you really are a phony.
BTW what did you say when TWU sold the building, when you were part of that administration?
Jim? Jim? hello????
as I said before, go ruin your own blog.
I can't speak for Tommy anymore than I can speak for you or you can speak for me.
ReplyDeleteWhen the building was sold the explanation was the union needed larger facilities which was true, we had more events and meetings than ever before. However that was not the real reason. The real reason given just before we lost the election was that the building was sold to protect the assets of the union. In hindsight the building was sold so it continue to operate without income from dues. Of course with scabs like you it was the only way to stay afloat. Yes I feel betrayed that we were lied too with the original explanation. Now start thinking about why the membership is being hosed with a condo.
Jim since you have completely changed your veiw on this maybe you'd like to consider these gems you published in the Chief.
ReplyDelete"Mr. Creegan, who lives in a world of perpetual turmoil, has decided to opine the same old nonsense members of Transport Workers Union Local 100 have heard and read about repeatedly from his camp—all two of them. Frankly, Mr. Creegan is no longer amusing but a bore."
You wrote this last year in a letter to the Chief, it is a matter of public record.
please explain.
