Union elections

The Landrum-Griffin Act also sought to insure that elections for union leadership positions were conducted in an open and democratic fashion. Every national union was required to hold elections at least once every 5 years and elections in local unions were to be held at least once every 3 years. The act also required that elections be conducted by secret ballot and that every member have a right to vote.

  1. I'm told that the contract fight takes a front row on this blog and all else takes a back seat. I'm also told the author of this blog is expected to go to work for John Samuelsen. Yet just a few months ago you wouldn't know it based on the following post by the same author:

    Trial
Transport Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO Constitution - Article XX - Trial of Members - Section 1. In the event that the Local Executive Board decides that the charges warrant a trial, the Local Executive Board shall elect a Trial Committee of three members in good standing and shall designate a member in good standing to present the charges before the Trial Committee. The members of the Trial Committee shall be selected by the Executive Board specifically for the trial of such charges and no officer or member who is a party or directly interested in such charges shall act as member of the Trial Committee.
We are aware that there is a trial going on - we here in why did you join the union believe this trial is wrong. It is a farce that makes a mockery to the members in good standing. It is clear that there is power play which is a waste of time. We would advice John E Samuelsen to stop this nonsense. If certain individuals want to use the trial as a means to remove a member in good standing so as to create vacancy then that is absurdity. The By-Laws of the Transport Workers Union of Greater New York Local 100, AFL-CIO - Article IX - Vacancies (c) where a vacancy occurs during 18 months prior to the next regular election, it shall be filled by appointment by the Executive Board.
It is clear this maneuver is not good for TWU Local 100 especially when John E Samuelsen is going around claiming it is contract year we should be one. We here in why did you join the union beg to differ - we reject this power play whole heartedly. Do not use the trial as a means to remove a member in good standing then turn around and appoint another. Rather you have to wait like every other member who wishes to run till the election of 2012.

  2. Michael Alden, the author of this blog will try and run for one of the many electable titles out of TA Surface. He is attempting to bridge the gap between him and Samuelsen so that Sammy lets him on board his re-election ticket. The job offer he crows about (whether true or false) will then be offered and accepted by this maggot. Why Samuelsen thinks this creepazoid is worth even a second glance with his 13 member blog is beyond me. Guess Sammy thinks he needs every last vote. Had he actually done the job he was elected to do he wouldn't have to poll watch come next December. The hard reality is, (and I say this to anyone willing to listen) please ask yourself this one simple question: Name me just one thing John Samuelsen has done where you can honestly say Wow John that was a bottom of the 9th walk-off grand slam home run you just hit for us. The debacle of the extended Solidarity Fund vote? The moronic failure to put the $3+ million Solidarity Fund money into an interest bearing account? Jay Walder spitting in our faces with 1000+ layoffs? The lovely American Express credit card scandal all blamed on past practices despite campaigning about how bad past practices were and how we had to Take Back Our Union? The funneling of $77,983.28 to a socialist labor group in Haiti that proudly burned the American flag rather than a verifiable charity? The claim that his administration will have "complete transparency" which turns out to be harder to penetrate then the NYPD Blue Wall of Silence? The campaign pledge that their will be no E-Board members on staff...we'd like to welcome Paul Piazza, the vomitous Annie Hallahan and certified dues cheat Christopher Magwood to the microphone....E-Board members on staff. The greasy attempt to slide $96,000 from the building fund to cover a 2009 C.O.P.E. bill in 2011 despite the fact in 2009 C.O.P.E money deductions were being removed bi-weekly from my check. Are any of these things bottom of the 9th walk-off home runs by John Samuelsen? And this is the guy we have to lead us into a contract battle?

At the 2011 Mass Membership Meeting Samuelsen spoke out how on the night the 1000+ layoffs were slated to go into effect Jay Walder reached out to Samuelsen at his home by a late night phone call to ask him "how are you going to sleep tonight? I'm going to sleep like a baby" were Walder's words according to Samuelsen. Samuelsen never breathed a word of this tormenting phone call to anyone until now? Never once did he let the media know of this vicious hateful phone call by Walder. If it did happen like Samuelsen claims then John Samuelsen should resign his office immediately as he withheld this vital information that could have been proven with a phone bill and just may have swayed public opinion in our favor as nobody likes a bully and Walder could have been shown to be a callous hateful bully.

This is the kind of leader we have and this is the guy Michael Alden wants to work for. Damnation for you Manhattanville. May your entire depot see the fraud you are.

  3. It's pretty obvious by the postings on this site that Alden has shifted gears. He's gone from member advocate to blowhard. When you go from posting matters of concern to our members to cutting and pasting Landrum-Griffen Act sections and pieces of other mundane crap it shows you are about to take a bite of the apple offered by the snake. I predict in a very short time this blog will be mute.

Once again you are feeding the membership your version of the truth, which is not necessarily true.
Since you have spoken of me, I will answer you. I am not on Union staff.
There are 2 revenue streams inside TWU local 100. One is Union release, the other is TA release.
If you are on Union staff you get a salary paid exclusively by the Union.
Like your fiend Brother Jim did for a few years.
Not an assault on his job but merely a clarification. (don't get mad)
Usually those on staff are elected officers in divisions.
Like a Vice-chair or section chair.
If you are on TA release you are basically being paid by the TA to work your Union job.
    It is a contractual position.
    i.e. in the CBA.
Ms. Hallahan and I are on TA release not Union release which is not a staff position.
    So you are incorrect.
    We are not on staff.
Easy mistake to make if you are uninformed.
But if memory serves me correctly, I did already have this discussion with you, personally.
Once when you were in shop steward class and another time when we were just talking.
Why it comes up now is a mystery. Anyways......

I just wish those of you who wish to "bash" or make political points, get your facts straight.

At least you did not refer to me as "vomitous".
After I would have looked up its meaning I would have probably felt bad about it.

  5. Paulie you could never be vomitous. Inherently wrong, absolutely...but never vomitous. Christopher Magturd the same status as you and Miss Vomitous?
