December 15th contract rally

With our contract end 30 days away, TWU Local 100 organized a contract rally outside of MTA headquarters at 2 Broadway, the site of MTA Labor Relations and Managerial offices. The call was put out far and wide to ‘Stand as One’ and ‘fight’ for your contract. Good ideas, but was it the knockout success it needed to be? Was it the kick-start moment our contract fight needs?
The answer plainly is no it was not.
First off, the attendance was sparse. From our view about 750 to 1000 members showed up. Which leads to a few questions:
  • Are members taking this contract seriously?
  • Is TWU Local 100 at fault for not getting the word out?
  • Who picked a Thursday for a rally?
Members are either apathetic, uninspired, apprehensive or resigned to the fact that our next contract will be a bad one. How else could anyone explain a modest crowd at a contract showdown meeting? The ‘push’ inside the Union Hall began this past Monday Dec. 12th. Way too little time to build a mass rally, but some members did get the word. The question must be then: Why didn’t they show up? Some divisions like MOW and TA maintenance were there in large numbers, others like MTA Bus were not. Even some Vice Presidents did not show up: John Day (MTA Bus), Brian Clarke (Mabstoa) must have had pressing prior commitments. Earl Phillips subbed for VP Clarke and a surprisingly animated and vocal Angel Giboyeaux made sure no one missed VP Day.
The physical area outside 2 Broadway was deceiving as well, members were directed to a narrow lane in the street, at most 10 members could stand across the length of it. A cynical observer would remark that the last two Union events were held in small spaces, (Roseland Ballroom, outside 2 Broadway) to make small crowds look bigger. After all, perception is everything in many ways.
The usual music blared (we hate to nitpick, but who selects the music at these events? It is always the same tired songs over and over) then the speakers came and then some more speakers and even more speakers. Each department had a VP or other representative to speak for it. Then came the politicians, then came the Officials from other Unions, then went home about a quarter of the crowd.
Scheduled was a march to Zuccotti Park to join up with the Occupy Wall Street protesters. But by the time the many speakers wore the crowd down, repeating the same damn thing over and over, only about half those members who came to the rally actually arrived at Zuccotti Park.
What did they find at Zuccotti Park? About half-a dozen Occupy Wall Street OWS protesters. A slew of Police Officers (we hope making over time OT). The highlight of the night was the ‘mike check’ speech by Amy of OWS. As we found out that night, a ‘mike check’ is when a group is not allowed to have amplified devices, whatever the speaker says is repeated by others in the audience so everyone can hear the content of the original speech. Cute, effective and good reason for people to keep their speeches as short as possible. Too bad the rally outside 2 Broadway did not have a ‘mike check’.
It is fairly easy to anticipate what the other TWU related blogs and websites will say about this rally - ‘The membership is not in support of this administration’, ‘look how few people showed up to the contract rally.’. But that is their usual simplistic, myopic view. Here at why did you join the Union we tend to see the larger issue rather than the politically expedient slant.
The question though remains - does this relatively low turnout at this contract event signal a lack of support for the John Samuelsen administration? If one calculates that 35% to 40% of the membership are not in good standing (eligible to vote for the contract), calculate that 3000 members or so of TWU are not even covered by this contract, the MABSTOA turnout was low for one reason or another. You could also factor in that at least one third of our members are working at any given time and the fact that Thursday is not a good day for a rally. The answer to the question of is the rally’s turnout a sign of little politically, would be that the pool of potential attendees were relatively small.
In fact, the declared opposition of John Samueslen was on the other side of Broadway across the street from the main rally site and they had less than 10 people with them. So what should that tell you?
What this rally does tell you is that TWU Local 100 organizing better start living up to its name. On an Organizing level it was bungled. The building of such an event has to have more than a 2 day window. The rally also should not have been so close to the Mass Membership Meeting. Space between meetings is important. If the Date was significant, remember DEC 15th 2005 TWU went on strike and shut the entire city down for 3 days, then the MMM should have been earlier, maybe in November. TWU Special Events and Organizing has had a bad few months. Whether it is getting a larger crowd out to rallies or running out of food on event days or providing proper spacing between events, the ball has been dropped and now must be put back into play.

  1. It pains me to tell you that while our members are being urged to protest, join rallies and show support for the Wall Street crowd your president has been busy stuffing his face at several restaurants with Lhota the new head of the MTA. Here is a quote from the Wall Street Journal:

Once Mr. Lhota learned in October that Gov. Andrew Cuomo planned to appoint him to the top job at the MTA, one of his first phone calls was to Mr. Samuelsen, according to people familiar with the matter. The two made plans to get together over hamburgers in Hell's Kitchen, near the headquarters of Mr. Samuelsen's union.
Last week, a few officials from the union and the transit authority had a cordial dinner at Nebraska Steakhouse, near the MTA's offices in Lower Manhattan, people familiar with the matter said. (Mr. Samuelsen is quick to point out that he always splits the bill with Mr. Lhota.)

So while the president stuffs himself and enjoys a few yuck yucks with management you and the members should join the mob at Zucotti Park. Smells like a sell out could be whats for desert.

  2. Come on Jim it is well known that at contract time the head of the Union gets together with the head of the MTA and talk turkey over dinner.
It is pretty standard and to make it a sell out is just not the truth.
To make it sounds like they are hitting the clubs and partying is not fair.
What we should be concentrating on is teh fact that these two are talking.
    WHich is a good thing.
With that %$%$er Walder this woould not have been possible.

  3. So he's not part of the 99%. Rather he's making an ass out of all of you. I was at the main table twice. This leadership isn't even doing that.

  4. You want us to believe that the Main Table is not Negotiating?
Again that cannot be the truth.
I don't understand your opposition to OWS either.
To me it is a noble and worthwhile fight. While banks and corporations get government bailouts millions of honest hard-working Americans live from pay check to pay check.
The system needs fixing.'The working man's tax money bails out the rich and they give themselves million $ bonuses.
    No, that is not right.
Cuomo is ending the millionaires tax, no that is not right either.
The fact that Local 100 took the lead in the Labor side of this movement should be something we should be proud of.
The fact that Local 100 led a march of 15, 000 people down broadway in support of OWS is something else we should be proud of.
I know which side Quill would have been on, and so do you.
OWS is something that transcends politics and political affiliation.
It was along time coming, it is here to stay.

As one of the few TWUers who is active in the union struggle I want to make it clear that I feel our Local's obligation is to us first. I do NOT think my Local needs to feed the homeless, clothe the cold, concern themselves with student Metrocards other than making sure the kiddies have their buses and trains available or involve themselves in the Occupy Wall Street fiasco. If you pull out 5 OWS protesters and ask them each why they are there you will get 5 (maybe more) totally different answers which tells me they have no real hard direction other than tossing sh*t on the wall and seeing what sticks. This is NOT what I want my union to be involved in. John Samuelsen attends these OSW rallies because Steve Downs and Labor Notes are what drives this union's far out socialist agenda.

John bellows on and on about the 1% as opposed to the 99%. Well quiet as he would like it to be kept John Samue;sen is our 1%. He is the first Local 100 President to reach the $150,000 yearly salary plateau. He regularly dines (not just with Joe Lhota) at the high end PJ Clarke's and other fine dining establishments (does Mrs. Samuelsen ever cook?) and he is chauffeured around everywhere he goes by his $100,000 a year minions. I came within a few hundred bucks of making $80,000 this year at my tools working one RDO each and EVERY week. I work far harder than Harry Wills or Shannon Poland or Jim Gannon or Steve Downs and certainly much harder then Kevin Harrington. So I ask who is the 1% and who is the REAL 99%? About the only thing he consistently does that is NOT like a 1%er is the manner in which he dresses. How many black Local 100 President shirts does this guy own? Did he meet with Joe Lhota at PJ Clarke's over $75 burgers dressed in his normal slobbish manner. I'll bet you Lhota was wearing a jacket and tie.

Samuelsen's release time carping seals (all of which have a terminal case of THE DISEASE) will say: the way he dresses is of no consequence but that it shows he is a blue collar kind of guy and not a corporate guy. Bull - oney.

I was at 2 Broadway as was Paul Piazza, who looked so official in his green vest while communicating with the Local 100 shot callers via that black & yellow Hammacher Schlemmer portable radio. Were you involved in tabulating then bogus announced headcount of 1500? Truthfully, it was much closer to 800 then 1500, which at a time when we are facing such contract uncertainty is an indictment on John Samuelsen's inability to effectively mobilize the members on any issue including critical ones like the rally in front of 2 Broadway. I wonder how many members would show up at these rallys and protests if they knew ahead of time that they were NOT going to get the standard trinket bag containing a Local 100 t-shirt, pen, calendar and bandanna. Do I dare say the number might be less than half of the honest attendance figures? Same with our monthly conductor/tower meetings. month after month it is a roll of the dice as whether or not we will have a quorum of 10 show up. With the MTA looking to bleed us dry and then restructure our pensions for their benefit, these monthly meetings in all titles should be packed. Another failure on the part of Team Samuelsen to convey the importance of participation. The building custodians of Local 32BJ promise to strike on December 31st if building owners continue their absurd contract demands and they backed this up with a Midtown Manhattan rally that filled to capacity 7 NYPD crowd control pens with an estimate of over 11,000 of their members attending. John Samuelsen couldn't mobilize 11,000 Local 100 members if he were standing on the street handing out $5 bills.

  7. "Were you involved in tabulating the bogus announced headcount of 1500?"

the nexus of my power is great but not that great.

    1. Now that you have seen me working at a TWU you can't say I do not do anything but sit around the Union Hall and eat bon-bons.

    2. I was assisting the "great" Nick Bedell at that point.

    3. More seriously, the TWU has a history of fighting for social justice. Workers rights, civil rights etc. We were ate the forefront of those fights and naturally are at the forefront of this fight.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but those who say the TWU has no business being involved in OWS have absolutely no idea or concept of the history and leagacy of this Union.
Either that or they just try to putdown everything this administration does.

Which list do you fall under?

  8. BTW since you mention that Samuelsen was the first President who made 150K, you should have been fair and wrote that Isreal RIvera made even more money as a Samuelsen underling.

But who says life is fair.

  9. I am not denying TWU has a long history of social involvement, what I am saying now with all we are facing from the MTA can we please concentrate on us 100% and when we have cleaned up our own MTA doled out mess we can lend a hand getting the word out on dog and cat adoption, expanding the bike lanes in and around the 5 Boroughs and help the Riverside Park Conservancy with their GREEN message.

Come back to me after Sammy gets us a three year deal worth 4% + 4% + 4% with no layoffs. Until then I would prefer not to march to the Steve Downs - Labor Notes drumbeat.

PS: John Samuelsen is closer to $170K when you factor in his $5,600+ International E-Board stipend and the $13.5K personal INTEREST FREE LOAN that really wasn't a loan but we only called it a loan on paper because we had no choice.

Don't you just love a piece of garbage like Harry Lombardo coming to the mic and telling us he "understands" our struggle and he made $257,000 last year. Sorry but anyone who brings home a quarter of a million or more per year does not understand our pain and John Samuelsen who claims to be fighting the 1% needs to only ask to see Harry Lombardo's W2 form come January and see just how far from being in the 99% Lombardo is.

  10. Why would anyone let a scumbag like Mahoney post on his blog. Here's a guy that beggged Samuelsen (JS),to let him stay on the job until he was 62 because he couldn't go back to his bus. Out of the graciousness of his heart, JS let Mahoney stay until he was 62 and could retire. While he worked for JS, Mahoney bad mouthed his prior hands that fed him, namely Roger and Ed. Now that Mahoney is retired and no longer getting fed by JS, he bad mouths him. Mahoney is the worst kind of a human being, one that shows no appreciation for a good deed. Mahoney's game now is to bad mouth the current leadership of Local 100 to find favor in a possible new administration as the Retirees Director, a job he had for 8 years under Roger. 8 years, and the retirees membership went from 12,000 to 6,000. Do us all a favor and throw Mahoney off your blog or better yet, under your bus.
