Trump's Birther Claims Can't Be Swept Under Rug

In a clear shot at Donald Trump, First Lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday that years of questioning her husband's birthplace cannot be undone with a sentence in a press conference or blamed on others.

"There are those who questioned and continue to question for the past eight years whether my husband was even born in this country," Michelle Obama said during a campaign event for Hillary Clinton. "And let me say, hurtful, deceitful questions, deliberately designed to undermine his presidency, questions that cannot be blamed on others or swept under the rug by an insincere sentence uttered at a press conference."

Earlier this month Trump incorrectly claimed to have "finished" the birther controversy he says Clinton started during her 2008 campaign. The Republican presidential nominee actually pushed the false narrative for years by continuing to suggest Barack Obama was born outside the United States.

"During his time in office, I think Barack has answered these questions with the example he set and the dignity he's shown by going high when they go low," the first lady said.
