The members of that division have spearheaded a campaign against the Samuelsen assessment ‘Solidarity Fund’ by petitioning the employer. They state that they did not consent to this solidarity fund and that they did not agree to a deduction from their pay checks.
Steve Downs chair of the train operators claimed that he has the backing of all train operators agreeing to a one year deduction from their pay checks. If that is accurate then why would the members of that division petition the employer? Clearly the membership are not happy and those officers do not have the backing of their membership.
Couple of train operators chimed in that Steve Downs is useless and a waste of space. They questioned what about the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, how they delivered the monies to Haiti, whether Samuelsen and TBOU threw the money in the air and whether it landed in Haiti by itself?
We inquired why they did not vote against the assessment and they replied that they did vote against the assessment. However they question the whole voting process and they do not believe that less than 10% of the membership have a right to impose the assessment compared to the rest. They also demanded that if any assessment in the future be levied on the membership it should be based on 51% of the general membership. In addition that the voting should be made by paper so it can be verified and if necessary challenged.
In addition they do not agree with Steve Downs’ point of view that this assessment should be for a year long and if he is looking for alliances from other executive board members so as to have the numbers to extend this toxic assessment. Thus they promised for that he would not be the chair of train operators division for long, he won the division narrowly, they added they need a leader not an informative.
